York County Community College (YCCC) is pleased to announce that Carla Samano Lopez is our 2024 Leon A. Goman Scholar.

Carla, an international student from Mexico, is currently excelling in our Veterinary Technician Program and will take on the role of President of the Vet Tech Club next semester.

Despite her demanding commute to campus everday from North Yarmouth, Carla remains environmentally conscious opting for various methods of public transportation to reach school. Rain or shine, she’s dedicated to her studies, often spending her commute time practicing French on Duolingo to pursue her dream of becoming trilingual.

Carla says she has found a second homeat YCCC, where she feels that teachers, tutors, and staff are deeply invested in her success both academically and personally. She values the support and guidance she receives, often combining tutoring sessions with valuable life advice.

When she’s not at school, Carla dedicates her time to volunteering at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, providing love and care to shelter animals. She plans to obtain her Vet Tech license to make an even greater impact in Maine’s veterinary community.

In her free time, Carla unleashes her creativity through drawing and painting, particularly enjoying capturing the essence of her friends’ beloved pets. Bowling and movie nights with her best friend round out her weekends, adding joy and relaxation to her busy schedule.

The Leon A. Gorman Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 by the children of Leon and Lisa Gorman in honor of Mr. Gorman’s 80th birthday. The scholarship supports Maine community college students who demonstrate strong academic achievement, financial need, and a commitment to community service, a hallmark of the scholarship’s namesake.
